Black and White

These are a collection of backgrounds I did for my third year group film. As you can see from the post below, which was also work done for the same film, the story changed significantly and so the art direction with it. I did the production design and layouts for this film along with the talented Saud Boksmati who also designed the characters.

This was a very dark story about abuse, slavery and oppression. Colour seemed redundant, and even the few tests I did with a gloomy colour scheme seemed inappropriate. A scratchboard like treatment was the base idea for this style.

While the idea’s were drawn from a variety of media and artists, major influences were Lynd Ward and Kathe Kollwitz. If you click to see them larger I suggest saving them on your desktop and seeing them in a slideshow. It really makes a difference if you see it in a way where your whole screen is covered in black and white.

Hi Sanatan!

It's been a long time. Stumbled upon your blog. It's all really good work. Love the sketches and the detailing.

I particularly like 'Black and White', 'I just wanna dance' and 'Field trip'. Brilliant! Keep up the good work. It always feels great to have one's artistic juices flowing. I'd heard from Sarah that you're doing really well. And, I can see that now ;)

Anyways, feels good to be back in touch. Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Prachii

P.S.: I hope you can place me! :D

I had been to this blog in ages, but I am as amazed as ever by the raw talent and cutting clarity in your work. The first origami-diamond-2010 background is just awesome, and is my desktop wallpaper right now.
Your work continues to impress and inspire me. I hope to be astounded again in the near future with updates here.

Take care,
Love,
Terence
